Exchange Online and hybrid mail-flow RCA

After acquisition cutover, mail flow is inconsistent across accepted domains, connectors, DNS, and hybrid coexistence.

Business context

The architect must restore service and explain the decision path to operations, security, and executives.

Technical objective

Troubleshoot simulated Exchange Online and hybrid mail-flow, then produce a complete RCA and DNS/connectors checklist.

Student instructions

  1. 1Inspect accepted domains, connectors, MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and Autodiscover assumptions.
  2. 2Review shared mailbox, distribution group, retention, and compliance constraints.
  3. 3Use the RCA builder to document symptom, impact, timeline, root cause, fix, validation, and prevention.
  4. 4Run validation on the mail-flow decision and RCA sections.

Troubleshooting

  • If root cause is unclear, separate DNS, connector, recipient, policy, and hybrid transport layers.

Cleanup

  • Export RCA and DNS checklist.

Required templates

  • Microsoft 365 simulated tenant layer - defined

Validation checks

  • Simulated M365 tenant ready: The simulated tenant layer exposes users, groups, licensing, Exchange, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, Intune, compliance, and service-health scenarios.

Expected result

The mail-flow RCA and hybrid coexistence decision tree are ready for support handoff.

Reset policy: Break/fix scenarios can be re-injected from the simulated tenant layer. Teardown policy: Simulated tenant state expires with the course lab TTL.
